Date and limitation calculator
Find the last date for appeals, revisions, reviews, SLPs, consumer matters, cheque bounce complaints and more, with the time for certified copies excluded.
Count from:
Exclude time taken for the certified copy (Section 12)
How the date is worked out
- The first day is excluded. Under Section 12(1) of the Limitation Act, the day from which the period runs is not counted. A 30-day period starting on 1 March ends on 31 March.
- Months and years follow the calendar. A three-month period starting on 15 January ends on 15 April. Where the month has no matching date, the last day of that month is taken.
- Certified copy time. For appeals, revisions and reviews, the time needed to obtain a copy of the judgment or order is excluded (Section 12(2) and (3)). The calculator counts it from the date of applying to the date the copy was ready, both days included. Courts compute this on the record, so check the endorsement on the copy.
- Court closed on the last day. Under Section 4, the filing can be made on the day the court reopens.
- Condonation. Where Section 5 applies, delay can be condoned on sufficient cause, but that is the court’s discretion. Plan to file within the period.
For general reference only. The starting point and the applicable article depend on the facts and the order being challenged, and special statutes and High Court rules may prescribe different periods. Verify against the statute before relying on a date.
